Keith Clanton hopes to earn spot on NBA team

Former UCF Knight, Keith Clanton earned a spot on the Orlando Magic’s Pro Summer League roster this summer. Clanton had to the opportunity to showcase his skills to the Orlando Magic’s general manager Rob Hennigan and the nine other teams participating in the summer event.

The Orlando Pro Summer League took place at the Amway Center from July 7-12. The Magic finished in 8th place with 13 points and a 2-2 record.

Clanton didn’t get much playing time as he averaged five minutes over two games. In the first game, he didn’t get a chance to do anything. The second game, Clanton played for six minutes and contributed two points, one assist and one steal. It was clear that every minute Clanton played he became more and more comfortable.

“It was a great experience knowing everybody here has dreams to play at the next level. Just knowing I have the opportunity of possibly playing at the next level is a great feeling,” said Clanton.

This past season at UCF, Clanton averaged 14.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and two blocks per game. Clanton is one of the most decorated basketball players at UCF.  After four years at UCF Clanton walked away as the program leader in rebounds (1,000), blocks (227), games played (129) and starts (121).

Clanton says he was invited right after the draft and it was a crazy process.

“I was a little nervous the first time but I was fine after that.”

The Orlando native attended Orlando Christian Prep and had his high school jersey retired this past February. During his high school years, Clanton averaged 18.2 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 3.9 blocked shots per game.

Knight’s head coach Donnie Jones attended the Magic’s game against 76ers to support the former Knight. Throughout Summer League several UCF staff member attended the Magic’s games in support for Clanton.

“I appreciate all the support. The coaching staff told me they would come out. They came out here to represent and help me out and give me all the support I needed,” said Clanton.

After going undrafted in the 2013 NBA Draft this was a great opportunity for Clanton to showcase his skills as he hopes an NBA team picks him up during the off season.

“I’m just ready to work out and stay ready for whatever happens.”
