Justin Wilson ready for the Detroit IndyCar double-header
The Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit presented by Quicken Loans doubleheaders air on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday June 2, both on ABC at 3:30p ET.
IndyCar ventures into new ground this weekend holding two races on the same track one on Saturday and the other on Sunday. The Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit run on the streets of the “Motor City,” will take center stage this weekend.
Justin Wilson, driving the No. 19 Dale Coyne Racing Honda is looking forward to this unique challenge. Thus far Wilson has been one of the most consistent drivers on the IndyCar series with four top-10 finishes in five races, including a third place finish at Long Beach. He recently finished fifth in the Indianapolis 500 this past Sunday.
Yesterday via phone I reached Wilson in Detroit and we talked about this historic IndyCar weekend.
JW: What is the biggest challenge you face this weekend in Detroit?
Wilson:”Each week we get ready for a single race and all of our concentration goes to doing our best to win. This week everything is doubled as we qualify twice, then run two races of 70 laps in the same car. Physically a race like Detroit will really beat you down. Your hands, feet and shoulder’s will be really sore. Then we will have 24 hours to regroup and do it all over again. So we will be taxed both from a physical and a mental standpoint.”
JW: What is the advantage of having two races in one weekend?
Wilson:”Well you have double the chance of winning. You could perhaps do poorly in Saturday’s race. Then learn from your mistakes and have a better run on Sunday. It is a chance for both drivers and crew members to learn something and put it to use in another race less than 24 hours later.”
JW: What is your game plan for the weekend?
Wilson:”Come Saturday we will look at doing our best to win that race. You can’t worry about Sunday. This about focus and doing all you can on doing your best to win. That would no different than last week in Indianapolis focus on one race at a time. Once Saturday’s race is over then we will change our focus to Sunday.”
