Justin Masterson Is Open To A Long-Term Deal

Justin Masterson is entering his final season under club control before he hits free agency, and although a big payday is expected via arbitration this offseason, it appears that the Indians right-hander is not only willing, but hoping to sign a long-term extension before hitting the open market.
Masterson’s agent, Randy Rowley, told Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer that he’d like to talk to the Indians about a deal but that he also isn’t in a hurry. As for the Indians, GM Chris Antonetti said this could “potentially” be discussed sometime between now and spring training.
Usually when a good player is just a year away from free agency the motivation to sign an extension is minimal, and considering that Masterson is 29 years old, coming off a season in which he received his first All-Star selection, and the price tag for pitchers on the open market seems to be steadily rising, it is even more peculiar that he would be willing to sign long-term at this point. But hey, if the Indians are willing to hand out a big five or six-year offer, why not?
