Johnny Manziel Selected By Cleveland Browns After Trade
With the 22nd overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns selected Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel.
How Sports Talk Florida sees the pick…
Johnny Football…it’s a name that, for the last two years, has been synonymous with college football, and more specifically, an array of mind-boggling Sports Center highlights characterized by an unconventional, backyard style.
In 2012 as a redshirt freshman, Manziel came out of nowhere to win the Heisman Trophy, leading the Aggies to signature wins over Alabama, Auburn, Missouri, and a 41-13 beat-down of Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl. That season, he went 295-for-434 for 3,706 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions, with 1,410 rushing yards and 21 rushing touchdowns.
The following season, with less of a supporting cast, Manziel played even better, going 300-for-429 for 4,114 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He tacked on 759 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. He capped off his college career with a dazzling 52-48 comeback win in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl over Duke.
In 25 career starts for the Aggies, Manziel went 19-6. He did draw some concerns off-the-field with an autograph scandal that forced him to miss the first half of a game against Rice. His off-the-field antics, specifically partying and hanging out with various celebrities, have been heavily-scrutinized and well-documented on social media. For the record though, Manziel spent nearly four months away from Twitter as he prepared for the draft.
At 5-foot-11 3/4 and 207 pounds, there are concerns about his small size and durability, particularly with his reckless style of play outside the pocket. There are also concerns about how he’d handle a pro-style offense after much of his college success came on plays that were unscripted. Given the right system and some flexibility from his offensive coordinator, Manziel will bring an instant spark.Johnny Manziel Selected By Cleveland Browns After Trade by Jenna Laine
