Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher is being very open about how his spring practices are going. When the topic of what underclassman receivers could fill the hole that potential first-round NFL draft pick Kelvin Benjamin [2] left behind, he’s talking with confidence.

Kermit Whitfield cannot do the things that Benjamin did for the Seminoles passing game, but his speed could be every bit as dangerous.

Fisher told ESPN that he can easily compare his receivers to each other, saying he would stack “Bobo” (Jesus Wilson [3]) and “Kermit” (Levonte Whitfield [4]) on top of each other.

Fisher has been hiding any possible concerns about replacing Benjamin, who wowed scouts at Tuesday’s pro day. Luckily, FSU still has senior Rashad Greene [5] who led the team with 76 catches last season.

Even though Benjamin’s size, strength, and agility combo can’t be replaced in Tallahassee, his departure won’t necessarily mislead Florida State in the wrong direction. According to ESPN, Whitfield and Wilson are small packages of instant offense. Whitfield initially trumpeted his speed for Florida State fans with touchdowns of 31 and 74 yards the first two times he rushed the ball, and then for a national audience with a 100-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter of the BCS National Championship.

Fisher told ESPN that these guys are hard to stop.

“You can jump or you can run there — there are two different avenues [to catch the ball]. Bobo and Kermit, those guys get the ball short and it’s hard to get them on the ground.”

Quarterback Jameis Winston [6] knows that receivers like Benjamin are hard to find but he is also recognizing the abilities from his new teammates.

“Kermit and Bobo, they’re going to catch the ball and you’re not going to tackle them,” Winston said. “Bobo is as electric as Kermit, but Kermit is special. And those guys can jump, and I’m pretty sure they can dunk.”

Winston says that he’s not worried about bringing on new guys.

“We trust all the guys we got. That’s why we come to Florida State, to win championships, and we’ve got great players,” Winston said. “It’s going to be a fast adjustment with timing, and we’re going to get this thing rolling.”
