Forget what FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher is saying he is one of about four candidates to replace Mack Brown as the next head coach at the University of Texas. Fisher is working on getting his team ready to play for a BCS National Championship and also finding time to do some recruiting.
Meanwhile, in Austin the Longhorn brain trust is looking at four names, Art Briles, Baylor head coach, Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State head coach, David Shaw, Stanford head coach and Fisher. Briles and Gundy have strong Texas ties and understand the the process of recruiting in Texas. Shaw and Fisher are nationally known for their abilities to reach beyond their respective bases and to be able to recruit nationally.
A couple of other names that could make the list would be Jim Mora, UCLA head coach and believe it or not, James Franklin, Vanderbilt head coach, who is someone many think is the next big hire at a national program. Make no mistake about it the Texas job is one college football’s best and most well paid.
Whoever gets the job will be expected to be competing for national championships every year. Is a job that FSU coach Fisher would take? I would expect he likes where he is right now, but if Texas calls he would be a fool not to listen.
