Jim Morris Previews Hurricanes 2014 Baseball Season
Why You Should Listen : Jim Morris discusses the upcoming 2014 Miami Hurricanes Baseball season. Morris talks about his pitching staff that he returns including his weekend rotation. Miami was ranked No. 13 in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s preseason rankings released in December – the team’s best preseason ranking from the publication since 2010.The Hurricanes return a number of key contributors from a team that finished 37-25 overall and earned the program’s college baseball-record 41st consecutive NCAA tournament berth in 2013.The Canes have not missed the postseason since 1972, marking the longest active postseason streak of any Division I program. Miami will return its entire starting rotation in 2014, including Louisville Slugger All-American lefthander Bryan Radziewski and USA Baseball Collegiate National Team member Chris Diaz. Both Radziewski (29th round, St. Louis Cardinals) and senior righthander Javi Salas (38th round, Minnesota Twins) decided to return to campus after being selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, while 2013 freshman All-America David Thompson will help anchor a Miami lineup that returns seven starters from a year ago. Among some other returners: senior outfielders Dale Carey and Tyler Palmer, infielders Alex Hernandez (second base) and Brandon Lopez (shortstop), as well as catcher Garrett Kennedy. Joining the returning nucleus is a recruiting class ranked among the best nationwide. The group was rated No. 4 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 6 by Baseball America is led by rightfielder Willie Abreu, catcher/first baseman Zack Collins, righthander Derik Beauprez, and outfielder Jacob Heyward who is the younger brother of Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward.
The Hurricanes open the season at home against Maine on February 14. Other notable dates on Canes season include hosting the Florida Gators on the weekend of February 21, travel to Tallahassee to take on the Seminoles on weekend of February 28, travel to Deland to take on the Stetson Hatters on March 12, a home and home series with UCF with the Knights going to Coral Gables on March 18th and the Canes coming to Orlando on April 9.
