This morning I joined Eric Lopez on Sports Talk Florida Mornings to talk about the latest with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including news that broke yesterday that Pro Bowl guard Carl Nicks is suffering from a recurrence of MRSA.
It’s clear Nicks won’t be back for quite some time, but the team can’t necessarily put him season-ending injured reserve.
Teammate Lawrence Tynes, who was diagnosed with MRSA and is still on the PICC line undergoing treatment, was placed on the non-football injury list, which sets precedent as to how the Bucs want to handle these infections.
Nicks is a Pro Bowl guard on a five-year $47.5 million deal, and denying benefits to someone who will be in your building for the next three years isn’t ideal.
His replacement Sunday will likely be Gabe Carimi, who is now fully-recovered from a two-week bout with mononucleosis.
Eric and I talked about this Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles and why this game has some emotional undertones for head coach Greg Schiano.
We talked about why Bucs fans shouldn’t overlook Nick Foles and how the offense looks with him versus Michael Vick — there’s not much of a drop-off.
We also talked about some areas the Bucs are hoping to improve in after the bye week, including taking more shots downfield and incorporating more of Jeff Demps.
