Sunday morning, I joined Eric Lopez on Sports Talk 1080’s The Insider Show to talk about Derrick Brooks’ election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
We talked about Brooks’ career, which I was fortunate enough to watch as a fan and then cover as a reporter, and how he was the real deal both on and off the field, in the public eye and in his private life.
We talked about Tony Dungy not getting into Canton and what made it difficult for him to get in to the Hall on the first ballot.
Dungy’s numbers — .668 as a head coach, the ninth-best winning percentage in NFL history and the only head coach to lead a team to the playoffs in 10 consecutive years — winning one Super Bowl in 10 playoff appearances may have hurt him.
It’s even tougher when players, coaches and owners aren’t separated in the voting process. With only five modern-era candidates getting it, it’s extremely difficult for coaches to get in, period.
I said that with Dungy, I felt his greatest contribution to the NFL wasn’t in terms of winning but in terms of shaping the league’s culture , particularly when it comes to the hiring of minority assistants, paving the way for five to become head coaches. It shouldn’t be overlooked, but it’s difficult to quantify that.
Of course, what would today’s show be without me offering a Super Bowl prediction? You can listen for that and more below: (you can listen on mobile devices too)http://audio.sportstalkflorida.com/1080/Insiders_02-02-14_Laine.mp3
