Bucs Safety Major Wright: ‘Every Day Our Expectation is to Take Away the Ball’

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have wrapped up their mandatory minicamp last week, but we certainly got a ton of great interviews, including this one with former Florida Gators and Chicago Bears safety Major Wright, who is shaping up to be a pretty valuable signing considering the injuries to both Dashon Goldson and Mark Barron that kept them both from participating in camp, and Wright’s familiarity with Lovie Smith‘s Tampa-2 defense.

Wright, who spent three seasons playing for Smith in Chicago, including starting all 16 games in 2012, said the team is right on schedule from his vantage point and ‘busting [their] butts.’

“Everybody is coming out here and doing great. We’re all flying to the ball, offense is moving the ball…we’re all competing, and that’s all you can ask for from your teammates.”

He emphasized the importance of takeaways, something paramount to Coach Smith’s ball-hawking defense, and something Wright did quite a bit of in Chicago. Between 2011 and 2012, Wright had seven interceptions and 15 pass break-ups in 27 starts.

“Every day we’ve got to come out here and get better. Every day our expectation is to take away the ball.”

He didn’t seem to think that the adjustments the Bucs’ secondary has made — transitioning from a single-high safety and quarters coverage to the two-deep safety scheme he played in Chicago — would be significant.

“It’s probably not much change, and probably more detail, doing your job. Everybody is accountable for their job in this defense. [If] one guy gets out of [his]  gap, you can get gashed. But I feel like everyone is going to do their job and buy in to it.”

The full extent of Wright’s own job is still to-be-determined. Goldson and Barron are the presumed starters once they both regain health, making Wright a projected backup and contributor on special teams.

Of course, Wright’s experience, knack for flying around the ball and familiarity with Smith, who has shown no loyalties during this regime change, shouldn’t be ignored either. Having struggled in 2013 without Smith, his mentor, he’s poised for a rebound.
