Jeff Demps Activated to Bucs 53-Man Roster
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have activated running back Jeff Demps to the 53-man roster, making him eligible to play this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.
Demps was acquired in a draft-day trade with the Patriots that sent LeGarrette Blount to New England in exchange for Demps and a seventh-round pick.
A national title winner at Florida in both football and track and field, Demps missed all of training camp and the preseason in order to finish his competitive track season in Europe.
He was placed on the Reserve/Did Not Report list and then on the Exempt/Commissioner’s Permission list, which gave the Bucs a two-week exemption period to work with Demps without him counting against the 53-man roster when he reported earlier this month.
By Monday afternoon that exemption period had concluded.
His role with the team has not been clearly-defined yet, but he can contribute as a kicker returner and as a running back, perhaps in a Darren Sproles-like capacity.
The move with Demps comes along with the unfortunate news that tight end Luke Stocker will be placed on season-ending injured reserve. Stocker had been battling a hip injury and did not make the trip to Foxborough this past weekend.
