The game of musical training sites just seems to be getting more and more interesting.  It seems that the Toronto Blue Jays  have informed Palm Beach County leaders that they’re no longer interested in relocating their spring training camp to the area, according to a story in the Palm Beach Post. [2]

The new plan has the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals joining forces and moving to a complex in Lake Worth. Although this far from a done deal it seems far more plausible than the Palm Beach Gardens complex that was killed earlier this year.

Right now the Astros are in Kissimmee and the Nationals are in Viera both way too far from the rest of the Grapefruit League. If there were to be a new two team facility in Lake Worth, it would cut down travel times considerably.

Both the Nationals and the Astros travel on average over an hour to play away games. But all that would change with a move to Lake Worth. It is 25 miles south of the St. Louis Cardinals and Florida Marlins spring training home at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.  Getting up the coast to play the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie would be about an hours drive.

The Cardinals and  Mets, are known to have clauses in their spring training site leases which allow them to exit the area if the number of teams in southeast Florida falls below four. The Blue Jays have decided to stay in Dunedin, in the Tampa Bay area, which is home to several club’s spring training sites including the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates. But it is a half-day drive between the bay and the southern Atlantic coast which makes spring training match-ups impractical.

The Yankees, Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers all used to train on the Atlantic Coast but left in recent years, creating a crunch.

Having four teams within a half hour of each other makes life a lot easy for finding a spring training opponent.
