General Manager Rob Hennigan has gathered a group of veterans to help mentor the Magic’s young core.
One of the Magic’s newest additions is power forward Jason Maxiell. The Magic front office and coaching staff is hoping Maxiell’s experience and work ethic rubs off on the young guys.
“We’re excited to welcome Jason (Maxiell) and his family to the Magic organization,” Hennigan said in a statement in July. “Jason brings an element of experience, toughness and resolve to our roster that we feel will benefit our team.”
Maxiell was selected by the Pistons in the first round of the 2005 NBA Draft and has spent his whole NBA career in Detroit. Maxiell, 30, became a free agent this summer and decided to part ways with the Pistons.
Maxiell will serve as a backup for Tobias Harris and Glen Davis, and if needed he can also step in as a center.
Last season, the six-foot-seven forward/center appeared in 72 games while averaging 6.9 points per game, 5.7 rebounds per game and 1.32 blocks per game in 24.8 minutes per game.
Maxiell missed the final eight games with the Pistons last season due to a detached retina. In early April he had surgery to fix the injury and will be ready to play on Oct. 9 when the Magic take on the New Orleans Pelicans in a preseason game.
The former Piston is coming off the most active season he’s had in his NBA career. Last season, he set career high in minutes (24.8), rebounds (5.7) and games (71) while averaging 6.9 points on 44.6 percent shooting.
Maxiell has been very active in the community throughout his NBA career. As a Piston, Maxiell helped raise money for breast cancer, student educational programs, reading and learning centers, the Children’s Hospital among many other charities. In 2010, he helped raise over $400,000 for the Food Bank Council of Michigan.
Maxiell will fit right in with the Magic’s community relations programs, which impact an estimated 75,000 children per year and annually provide over 6,000 volunteer hours.
This past summer, the Magic and Maxiell agreed to a five million two-year contract for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 season with the first year being guaranteed. Maxiell is set to make $2.5 million this coming season.
