Jake Matthews Drafted By Falcons
With the 6th overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons selected Texas A&M offensive tackle Jake Matthews.
How Sports Talk Florida sees the pick…
The son of NFL Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews, nephew of former Browns Pro Bowl linebacker Clay Matthews Jr. and cousin of Packers linebacker Clay Matthews III and Eagles linebacker Casey Matthews, Matthews’ impressive lineage is the only thing rivaling his on-field play.
In 2013, Matthews slid into the left tackle role at Texas A&M, starting 13 games and protecting Johnny Manziel’s blind side after Luke Joeckel departed for the NFL. He was also a team captain.
At 6-foot-6 and 308 pounds, he doesn’t have the athleticism or the sheer strength of Auburn offensive tackle Greg Robinson — he’s more of a finesse player and a highly-skilled technician at that — but his work ethic and leadership has more than made up for it.
He’s an excellent run blocker, and uses his long arms extremely well to ward off defenders. He can virtually line up anywhere along the offensive line, but has the makings of a franchise left tackle.Jake Matthews Drafted By Falcons by Jenna Laine
