The Jaguars struggled on both ends of the ball in the first half. The offense didn’t produce any points and the defense allowed three touchdowns.
In the second half, the defense showed improvement by not allowing any offensive points but the Jags offense still remained scoreless.
After Sunday’s game its clear the Jaguars have a long road ahead of them.
This coming week the Jaguars will have a few things they will work on. One of them being the offensive rhythm.
“I just never felt like we could get in a rhythm. A lot of that credit goes to Kansas City; they have a good defense, we knew they played good defense and credit should go to them. We still have to find a way to execute,” head coach Gus Bradley said after the game.
The Jaguars did not get a first down until late in the first quarter. It was quickly followed by the Chiefs’ cornerback Brandon Flowers picking off Blaine Gabbert. The turnover resulted in Alex Smith and Junior Hemingway connecting for a three-yard touchdown, which gave the Chiefs a 14-2 lead.
The Jaguars defense stepped up their game in the second quarter. The Chiefs only points in the second half came when linebacker Tamba Hali intercepted Gabbert’s pass and returned it for a 10-yard touchdown, which gave the Chiefs a 28-2 lead.
Gabbert completed 16 of 35 passes for 121 yards and was picked off twice.
“We just didn’t play as a group. We didn’t capitalize on our opportunities with the ball. It starts with me at the quarterback. We have to find ways to execute our offense. Given the circumstances, we just move on. There are a lot of things on tape that we need to correct. We just have to get better,” Gabbert said after the game.
Gabbert suffered a cut on his right hand late in the fourth quarter, which forced him to exit the game and get 15 stitches. It is still unknown how Sunday’s injury will affect Gabbert in the coming week.
“We’ll see how it is tomorrow,” Gabbert said. “It’s another day to day thing, and we will see how it is and move on.”
On the bright side, Maurice Jones-Drew played a whole game for the first time since suffering an injury to his left foot last October. Jones-Drew made his 100th regular season appearance on Sunday against the Chiefs.
“I think I played the most number of snaps out of all the running backs and some wide receivers. I was out there but we weren’t giving ourselves a good opportunity. It is just a wake-up call. We just have to keep on working, nobody quit and we kept fighting. We just have to continue to work and get ourselves in better position to make plays.”
Up next the Jags will head to the West Coast to take on Oakland Raiders (Sept. 15 at 4:25 p.m. ET) and the Seattle Seahawks (Sept. 22 at 4:25 p.m. ET.)
