In need of a veteran presence on defense, the New York Islanders signed defenseman Radek Martinek to a one-year deal on Wednesday.
Martinek, 37, has been skating with the Isles throughout the month of October after attending training camp on a professional try out.
New York actually drafted Martinek in the eighth round (228th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, and he’s played 466 of his 473 career regular season NHL games with the Islanders.
Bringing Martinek aboard will possibly offset the loss of another veteran defenseman, Lubomir Visnovsky, who is currently on IR with a concussion.
