Bulls improve mentality after close game
In USF’s 32-31 win over Nevada, there were multiple plays such as sophomore wide receiver Andre Davis’ 56 yard touchdown with :38 seconds to go and red shirt sophomore Chris Dunkley’s 52 yard touchdown catch with 2:37 left, the play that started USF’s comeback in the first place.
Remember though, at one point, USF was down by 15 points. That however, didn’t break them, even though this is a team that is one year removed from having a 1-5 record in one possession games.
“With as many close games we were in a year ago, to find a way to win a close game (I think) will start to validate some of the hard work that they have put into the off-season,” Bulls Coach Skip Holtz said.
Holtz was impressed with the entire team, gearing most of his
compliments towards the seniors after Tuesday’s practice.
“I think it was a total team effort when you look at the individual leadership that we had,” he said .“I think that it speaks volumes for the character and leadership of this senior class for them to have the confidence to hang in there and keep plugging along; there was never a doubt.”
“Even when they got the onside kick, a couple guys kind of hung their head, I heard [senior offensive guard] Danous Estenor yelling ‘you know, pick your head up; we’re not going out of here without a ‘W,” Holtz added.
How does the team benefit from a narrow/come-from-behind win?
“It’s like a weight off our shoulders, to really stick together and we’ve been working all summer with drills and conditioning trying to make sure we finish stronger than the way we started,” Bulls senior quarterback B.J. Daniels said.
“That was our problem last year and we definitely fought to the end of this one this past Saturday.”
According to Daniels, the come-from-behind wins are the games that will strengthen the team’s mentality.
“There are going to be times that we’re down and it’s just something that we can refer back to and say ‘hey guys we stuck together then let’s just make sure we stick together now and continue to keep going,” he added.
Big East honors Andre Davis this week
Bulls sophomore receiver Andre Davis was tabbed with the Big East player of the week honor after his 12 catch, 191 yard game against Nevada.
Davis set the program record for total reception yards on Saturday and according to him, he was unaware of his record breaking-pace until after the game.
“I really didn’t realize, I mean I just wanted to make plays for the team,” he said.
The Bulls delivered a piece of unfortunate news on Tuesday when the team announced that junior wide receiver Sterling Griffin will miss the rest of the 2012 season with a knee injury. Griffin is one of the teams starting wide outs, however, this season the Bulls have impressive depth at this position. He missed four games last season and also missed time in 2010 with an ankle injury. He is eligible for a medical red shirt for a sixth year of eligibility…Marcus Shaw (ankle) did not practice Tuesday and “did not look very good,” according to Holtz…red shirt junior Safety JaQuez Jenkins (back) was also sidelined Tuesday. According to Holtz, Jenkins will have X-rays performed this week to see if it’s just a muscle flare-up or a serious injury…the status of senior corner back Kayvon Webster is unknown and he did not practice on Tuesday.Insider: USF Bulls Roundup by Patti McDonald
