Insider: UCF Could Open Up Offense In 2013

Posted By Wes Goldberg On March 13, 2013 @ 4:31 PM In Legacy,NCAA | 2 Comments

UCF football returned to the field Wednesday in the first of 14 spring practices this season.

The Knights, coming off of a 10-4 season with a St. Petersburg Bowl win, will lose the senior contributions of Kemal Ishmael and Latavius Murray.

Returning for the Knights, however, is a group of talented pass catchers and quarterback Blake Bortles, that has head coach George O’Leary retooling the offense.

“This season we got to look to get the ball some more air,” O’Leary said.

Blake Bortles will enter his redshirt junior season coming off a season in which he threw for 3,059 yards, 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions that he capped off with an MVP performance by scoring four touchdowns in the bowl game.

Also coming back for UCF are the four leading pass catchers last season: Speedsters Rannell Hall and Breshad Perriman, as well as J.J. Worton and former quarterback Jeff Godfrey, who played well as a slot receiver last season.

UCF may not be crowding the backfield as much as they used to.

On the spring roster, only one half back is listed (which O’Leary used to pair with a running back) and no full back, compared to five tight ends are listed on the roster. The Knights currently have 10 receivers on the roster.

UCF already released the most anticipated schedule in school history and unveiled its new uniforms for its inaugural season in the new conference. A more pass-happy offense would certainly add to the excitement for fans.
