Insider: Ted Roof Leaves UCF for Penn State
Ted Roof is leaving UCF after 33 days to take over as Penn State’s defensive coordinator. Roof confirmed he leaving UCF via text to ESPN.com late Monday night. UCF Head Coach George O’Leary hired Roof as his new defensive coordinator on December 8.
Speculation of Roof leaving UCF for Penn State started over the weekend once Penn State hired Bill O’Brien. O’Brien and Roof are close friends having worked together on O’Leary’s staff at Georgia Tech and also worked together at Duke where Roof was the head coach and O’Brien was the offensive coordinator from 2005-2006.
O’Brien also was rumored to be targeting UCF offensive line coach Brent Key, who played at Georgia Tech while O’Brien was on the staff. However, Key is expected to stay at UCF.
Where does UCF go from here? O’Leary will have to make a move quickly with National Signing Day taking place on February 1.
