Insider: Prior Charges Could Be Introduced at Talib’s Trial

It seems as though Aqib Talib’s troubled past could follow him to a Dallas County courtroom.
The Dallas County District Attorney’s office filed a Notice of Extraneous Offenses on Friday, which informs the court and Talib’s attorney of any crimes, wrongs, or acts that the State may try to introduce against Talib during the State’s case-in-chief or sentencing, per court records obtained by ESPNFlorida.com.
Talib’s trial is scheduled to begin on April 16. Talib was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on March 29, 2011 after allegedly pistol-whipping and firing shots at Shannon Billings, his sister’s former live-in boyfriend, in Garland, Texas.
Among the offenses included in the notice are the charges of resisting arrest and simple battery from an August 2009 arrest where Talib allegedly struck a cab driver, David Duggan, in the head and neck. Talib pled not guilty and the case was dismissed after Talib agreed to a pretrial intervention program and to attend anger management classes. The other incident listed is a 2004 charge in Dallas County of burglary of a habitation that was later reduced to misdemeanor theft.
It’s not entirely clear at what point the State can or will bring up these matters. Their inclusion in the notice does not necessarily mean that the State will bring them up, but that it reserves the right to raise them at the appropriate times during their case-in-chief or sentencing phase of the trial.
Aside from the matter with the taxi driver, Talib has been involved in other incidents since being drafted by the Buccaneers. He was involved in a fight with Cory Boyd, his teammate at the time, at the NFL Rookie Symposium in 2008. In May 2009, he reportedly swung his helmet at teammate Donald Penn, striking Torrie Cox, who required stitches to close up facial lacerations.
