Insider: Rompza to Return Dec 30
On Monday the NCAA ruled that UCF senior point guard A.J. Rompza will be eligible to resume playing on December 30 once he repays $900 in improper benefits. The Knights will play on December 30 against either James Madison or Rhode Island as part of the UCF Holiday Classic tournament.
“We respect the NCAA’s decision,” said men’s basketball coach Donnie Jones in a UCF Press Release. “I know sitting out is tough for A.J. and that he is anxious to get going. Once he meets the requirements set forth by the NCAA, we will welcome him back.”
In 2010-11, Rompza appeared in 31 games and started 19. He averaged 6.4 points and 3.2 assists per game. Rompza will end up sitting out the first 12 regular season games but will be available for every conference game and should help the Knights in back-court as UCF has been playing sophomore Isaiah Sykes at point guard to start the season with Marcus and Jeff Jordan getting minutes at point guard. Once Rompza returns, Marcus Jordan can focus more on playing shooting guard and allows Sykes to play multiple positions.
“We have worked with the NCAA on this issue and are satisfied that the outcome is fair and appropriate,” said interim Director of Athletics Al Harms in UCF Press Release.
The Knights this week are heading out to Bahamas to participate in Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament over Thanksgiving holidays for three games starting on Thursday with a match up with College of Charleston.
