For the Tampa Bay Lighting, it looked like it would be déjà vu all over again Thursday night at the Tampa Bay Times Forum when they took on the Washington Capitals.
After both teams hit the score sheet in the first period, the Capitals getting a goal from Troy Brouwer and the Lightning getting on the board with a Martin St. Louis goal, the Capitals opened up a big lead with three straight goals with two goals from Eric Fehr and a goal from Jay Beagle to open up a 4-1 lead.
The Beagle goal was especially frustrating for Lightning goaltender Mathieu Garon, as replays appeared to show that he had the puck covered.
The Lightning would once again come storming back, however, in what looked like would be a repeat performance of Tuesday night’s game against the Montreal Canadiens, when the Lightning came storming back to tie the game with three straight goals before losing in overtime.
Teddy Purcell would strike first, when he deflected a puck off of Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby, in what appeared to be an attempted pass to Steven Stamkos, to get the Lightning back to within a goal. For Purcell it was his third goal of the season.
The Purcell goal would give the Lightning a significant boost, and would result in another goal, this time from Nate Thompson, as Marty St. Louis sent him in on a breakaway to get the Lightning back to within a goal. It would not be enough though, as the Lightning would not be able to get the game tying goal, losing their sixth straight game, 4-3.
Lightning head coach Guy Boucher was maybe just a bit optimistic in his team’s play after Thursday night’s game. “It’s not one of those games where I can go into the room and start pointing the finger at guys. The players gave everything they had today.”
Still, the Lightning know they are going to have to find a way to stop digging holes for themselves early in games in order for them to get out of the slump they are in.
“Yeah, it’s tough,” Purcell said. “We can’t keep digging ourselves in a hole. We can’t comeback every game obviously. We just need to do a better job of keeping it a closer game.”
“They’re too good of a team to climb back into a game,” Purcell said. “Our work ethic is there, but we just need to keep working hard all the time.”Insider: Lightning Fall To Capitals 4-3 by Mike Corcoran
