Insider: Kevin Smith Back In NFL With Lions

Former Knight running back Kevin Smith is back in the NFL as he agreed to a 1 year deal to return with Detroit Lions.Smith returns to the Lions who drafted him in the 3rd round of the 2008 NFL Draft. In Three seasons with Lions, Smith ran for 1,856 yards as well as 91 receptions for 924 yards before getting released by Lions in 2010 in part due to Knee injury. Smith has been out of the NFL this season hoping for a phone call as he was just at UCF two weeks ago as part of homecoming weekend. Smith told everyone around that his Knee is fully recovered and wanted to get a chance to play again anywhere. Now Smith will be in Lions backfield that been hit with injuries as starting running back Jahvid Best who ended up replacing Smith in Detroit suffered concussion and is unknown when he be cleared to return. Maurice Morris started last two games for Lions in Best place as well as splitting carries with Keiland Williams. The Lions had lost Jerome Harrison for the season with brain tumor that was found on a physical Harrison took as he was about to get traded to Eagles for Ronnie Brown.

Smith had a great career at UCF including his last seasonas a Knightin 2007 where Smith led the Knights to a C-USA Championship and trip to Liberty Bowl rushing for 2,567 yards which is 2nd most ever in NCAA single season recordbehind only Barry Sanders by 62 yards when Sanders set the standard at Oklahoma State in 1988 when Sanders would go on to win the Heisman. Smith announced when he was at UCF during homecoming that he would return to UCF in January to finish getting his degree and help out with the football program.
