Insider: FSU, Notre Dame Excited for Champs Sports Bowl
While heading to Orlando in late December might not be as sweet as making a trip to the BCS, head coaches Jimbo Fisher and Brian Kelly believe it is the next best thing. They met with assembled members of the media on Wednesday at the Citrus Bowl to discuss the anticipation of playing in the Champs Sports Bowl.
Due to the high profile brands of the Seminoles and the Fighting Irish, both coaches believe this December 29th matchup will have a big bowl game feel. Fans apparently agree, with Florida Citrus Sports announcing a sellout just before the coaches were introduced.
There is no doubt the buzz around this game can be traced back at least in part to the storied showdowns between the two schools. Florida State and Notre Dame have met seven times.
The most legendary of those meetings occurred in 1993. Dubbed “The Game of the Century”, it was a matchup of number two ND and number one FSU that resulted in a 31-24 win for the Fighting Irish.
A year later, in 1994 the two actually faced off in Orlando in a neutral site game. A then record crowd of over 72,000 packed the Citrus Bowl to watch FSU get revenge in the series.
At 8-4 both teams will be looking for that final capper to solid seasons. With Fisher and Kelly both finishing their second seasons as head coaches at their respective universities, this game could set the tone for a pivotal 2012 at each program.
