Insider: FSU Host Stanford In Super Regional
The Florida State Seminoles will take on the Stanford Cardinal this weekend at Dick Howser Stadium in the College Baseball Super Regionals with a trip to the College World Series on the line.
The Noles are led by senior outfielder James Ramsey, who leads the Seminoles offense with 13 home runs and is hitting .385 on the year. Ramsey, who was the 23rd overall pick in the MLB Draft this week, will lead the Seminoles offense along with first basemen Jayce Boyd who leads FSU with a .390 average and 57 RBIs. The very talented Cardinal pitching staff they will be facing is headlined by Golden Spikes Finalist Mark Appel who will start game one on Friday. Appel was taken eighth overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the draft and comes in with a 12-1 record and a 2.29 ERA. Appel is ranked fifth nationally with 127 strikeouts in 119 innings of work. Stanford’s number two starter Brett Mooneyham (7-5, 4.26 ERA) was picked by the Washington Nationals in the third round (111th overall) figures to get the start in game two on Saturday.
The Seminoles will throw freshman ace Brandon Leibrandt, who posted his best college start to date with eight shutout innings and ten strikeouts in the NCAA Regional against Samford last weekend. Leibrandt is the son of former major league baseball pitcher Charlie Leibrandt. Fellow freshman Mike Compton should get the start in game two.
