How Louisville Can Still Reach A BCS Bowl

UCF pulls the big upset on the road over Louisville.

As with the other two seasons the University of Louisville’s football team reached a BCS bowl, the Cardinals will need some help from a conference rival.

In 2006, after a loss to Rutgers handed U of L its first and only Big East Conference loss, the Scarlet Knights went on to lose games both at Cincinnati and West Virginia. The Cardinals made the Orange Bowl with a 6-1 league record ahead of two 5-2 teams.

In 2012, following a loss to Syracuse, U of L dropped a second straight game to Connecticut on a day the Cardinals were a double-digit favorite. Rutgers did the same in losing at Pittsburgh, which set up the de facto Big East title game a week later in Piscataway, N.J., that U of L rallied to win and earn a Sugar Bowl bid.

U of L needs more of that turmoil atop the American Athletic Conference to reach another BCS game, after losing last Friday to Central Florida.
