Hernandez Shaky, Offense Sleepy, Rays Fall To Jays 6-2

The Tampa Bay Rays fell to the Toronto Blue Jays by a final score of 6-2. The loss drops the Rays to 69-52 and they lose a game on the AL East leading Boston Red Sox who defeated the New York Yankees 6-1.

Roberto Hernandez [2] (6-13, 5.00 ERA) worked the first 5.2 innings and allowed 5R/4ER on 7  hits striking out 3 walking 1 and hitting a batter. He allowed a solo home run to Jose Bautista [3] and a solo home run to Adam Lind [4]. Both home runs came with Hernandez ahead in the count 1-2.

J.A. Happ [5] (3-2, 4.93) returned to Tropicana Field for the first time since being struck in the head by  a line drive off the bat of Desmond Jennings [6] on May 7th.  He went 5.1 innings allowing 2R/ER on 5 hits striking out 5 and walking 1.

The Rays offense left 8 men on base and scored both their runs in the bottom of the 4th on a Ben Zobrist [7] sacrifice fly to drive in Jason Bourgeois [8] and a Yunel Escobar [9] single to drive in Evan Longoria [10]

Hernandez left the game with a Brett Lawrie [11] at 2nd base and 2-outs with the Rays trailing 4-2. Alex Torres [12] came in an Lawrie attempted to steal 3rd. Torres stepped off the mound but threw wildly past Evan Longoria and Lawrie came in to score giving the Blue Jays a 5-2 lead.

Bradon Gomes, who had been on the disabled list since May 7th (right lat strain) replaced Torres in the 8th inning and allowed a solo homer to Adam Lind on a 0-2 pitch to give the Jays a 6-2 lead.

Cesar Ramos [13] replaced Gomes and worked a perfect 9th.

The Rays will look to win the rubber game of the series tomorrow at 1:40 p.m.  Chris Archer [14] (6-5, 3.10 ERA) will take on Todd Redmond [15] (1-1, 3.62 ERA).
