RECAP: Henderson Alvarez Does It All In Win Over St. Louis

Six Hitters Deliver Multi-Hit Performances In Victory

Henderson Alvarez Pitches Strong, Collects Three Hits In Win Over Cardinals

The Marlins collected sixteen hits en route to scoring eight runs to take the weekend series vs. the Cardinals 2-1.

Henderson Alvarez got the start and allowed just one run over seven innings on five hits, including a home run, one walk, and three strikeouts in his first career start against St. Louis.

The home run, a solo shot by Kolten Wong in the bottom of the seventh, was the first Henderson Alvarez had given up in 68 2/3 innings of work.

The Marlins victory means that they have won each of the last ten games started by Alvarez, a new club record. Previously the record was nine straight set back in 1993 when Chris Hammond took the hill.

Alvarez also collected three hits in today’s game,

The Marlins were able to score a run in the first on a two-out single by Casey McGehee, scoring Christian Yelich, extending his on-base streak to 30 games and his road hitting streak to 20 games.

The game would remain 1-0 until the sixth, but that inning Miami was able to stretch their lead to 4-0 on a pair of two-out RBI singles. The first was a two-run single by Marcell Ozuna and the second was by Jeff Baker.

The Cardinals, as previously mentioned, were able to get on the board against Alvarez in the seventh on a one-out solo home run by Kolten Wong in his return from the disabled list, his second on the season.

The Marlins further extended their lead in the top of the eighth, though, as Baker delivered his second RBI single of the afternoon and Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit his ninth home run of the season, a three-run shot.

The Cardinals offense tried to do what the Marlins did last night and come back late, but they were only able to score three runs in the last two innings, falling to Miami by a final score of 8-4.

The Marlins took the series 2-1 but are still six games back of the Braves (who lost to the Diamondbacks today) for first place.

The team will now head to Arizona for a three-game set against the Diamondbacks.
