Marlins Drop Back Under .500 With Loss In Game 2

Andrew Heaney couldn’t find the same magic he did in his big league debut tonight as the Marlins fell to the Phillies 7-4.

Overall, Heaney threw five innings allowing five earned runs on four hits, two walks, and five strikeouts. He picks up the loss for the second consecutive start to begin his career, and he owns a 4.91 ERA in this span.

This was one a little more lopsided than his last start, though.

The Marlins were trailing early in this one as well, as the Phillies scored three runs off Heaney in the first off. The first came as a result of a throwing error by Jarrod Saltalamacchia, allowing Jimmy Rollins to score on an attempted steal of third base, and the last two came on a two-run home run by Marlon Byrd [1].

The Marlins were able to score single runs in the top of the second and fifth inning on an error on a pop up by Chase Utley, scoring Saltalamacchia, and a sacrifice fly by Casey McGehee, scoring Derek Dietrich.

The Phillies offense continued to collect hits in key situations and took a 7-2 lead heading into the top of the eighth inning. The Marlins, however, cut the deficit to 7-4 on a two-run dinger by Garrett Jones [2], his 10th on the season.

The Marlins wouldn’t score again in this one as Jonathan Papelbon came on to work the ninth, working around a two-out single by Giancarlo Stanton to pick up his 18th save on the season.

With the loss, the Marlins currently sit three games back of the Nationals for first place in the division and three and a half games back of the Dodgers for the second wildcard spot.

The Nationals are currently tied with the Brewers and the Dodgers are closing in on a win against the Royals, so the Marlins might find themselves in a different situation a few hours from now.

Tomorrow’s Probables:

The Marlins will look to guarantee at least a series split tomorrow as they send Henderson Alvarez (4-3, 2.39) to the mound to face A.J. Burnett (5-6, 3.89).

Alvarez has taken over the ace role in the rotation since Fernandez’s injury and has excelled. He has been especially sharp of late, allowing just three runs over his last three starts, spanning 18 2/3 innings.

Burnett has been sharp recently as well, as he is 2-1 with a 2.22 ERA over his last three starts, spanning 24 1/3 innings.
