Harvey Updyke Dunk Booth Shut Down After Threats
Harvey Updyke, the man infamous for poisoning the tree at Toomers Corner on the campus of Auburn University won’t be getting dunked or pied in the face on Sept. 29, as multiple Auburn fans had hoped.
According to ESPN, the decision came Thursday after Dee Dee Bonner, AJ McCarron’s mother and Katherine Webb, McCarron’s girlfriend, received death threats on social media.
He had said he would “do whatever” the charity event organizers wanted to help raise money at a charity event, however his planned appearance was pulled Thursday after what was believed an opportune time for Auburn fans to get even with him. But once news of the event broke, it became an issue.
“It seems to be taking away from the primary purpose, which is raising awareness for children’s cancer,” Bonner told ESPN.com. “We don’t want to take away from the focus. We needed to get away from it.”
McCarron’s mother said her son had nothing to do with the planning of the event, which is still going to happen…just without Updyke.
Updyke was sentenced to six months in jail for unlawful damage of an animal or crop after he killed the 130-year-old oak tree sacred to Auburn fans following the 2010 Iron Bowl. A judge ordered him to pay $800K to AUburn and he has been banned from the campus for life.
