University of Miami head coach Al Golden has taken his name out of the running for the Penn State job. He met with the search committe on Saturday and withdrew his name from consideration.

There were a number of media reports saying Golden would offered the job, replacing Bill O’Brien at State College. However, there was no such offer made by the Penn State representatives.

Golden has an outstanding recruiting class headed into Miami and he is content to stay in South Florida. That is good new for Hurricane fans and it just might mean that the Miami job is more attractive than Penn State.

Penn State is looking now at Vanderbuilt head coach and former Maryland assistant coach James Franklin. He was in the running for the job at Texas that just went to former Louisville head coach Charle Strong. Both Franklin and Golden were thought to be at the top of the list at Penn State to replace O’Brian who left to become the head coach for the Houston Texans.

The only other coaches left on the Penn State list at this point is Franklin, former PSU player and former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak and interim head coach Larry Johnson. Former Tampa Bay Bucs head coach Greg Schiano, once thought to be a top candidate is not mentioned in any media reports as someone Penn State is talking to at least at this point.

At the moment I thinkt that this will come down to Franklin and Johnson. Both men are good fits for the job and most importantly besides being quaulity coaches, they are outstanding recruiters. That is the big issue for  Munchak who has spent his entire carrer in the NFL and does have that all important recruiting experiance.
