Giancarlo Stanton Closing In On Marlins’ RBI Records
Posted By Matt Stein On May 23, 2014 @ 8:00 AM In Florida News,Insider Main,main feature,MLB,MLB - Miami Marlins | No Comments
Giancarlo Stanton is learning that he needs to be more than just a power hitter, he needs to be a run producer as well in order to be of the greatest benefit to the Marlins lineup.
Entering this weekend’s series vs. the Milwaukee Brewers, Stanton is hitting .305/.400/.588 with 12 HR’s and 44 RBI’s through 47 games.
Stanton’s 44 RBI’s leads the all of Major League Baseball.
Not only is he approaching his RBI total of 62 from last season (which he got in 116 games), he is also closing in on Mike Lowell’s RBI record from the 2003 championship season.
That season, Lowell drove in 76 runs before the All-Star break.
In order to break that record, Stanton has to drive in 33 runs over the next 46 games before the All-Star break. Given his pace thus far this season, this might actually be attainable for the 24-year old slugger.
Stanton could also set another RBI record for the Marlins, as no player has reached 50 RBI’s before June 1st in the franchise’s history.
Though time is running out in May, Stanton has a shot to reach that mark. He just needs to drive in 6 runs over his next 7 games.
Even if he doesn’t drive in his 50th run by June 1st, he could still set the record for the fastest player to reach 50 RBI’s in team history.
Mike Lowell also currently owns this record, as he reached that mark in 57 games back in 2001.
Stanton would need to drive in 6 runs in his next 10 games to set this record.
