The University of Florida won their first ever Women’ College World Series title last night in Oklahoma City. The Gators rolled over Alabama 6-3haed coach for a 2-0 series sweep before a crowd of 7,810 at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
Two Gator home runs, and 12 hits in all, helped ease the worries about their suddenly shaky defense, which hadn’t committed an error at the WCWS prior to accounting for four Tuesday.
This time — in their sixth WCWS and third championship series appearance — the Gators left with the trophy.
Hannah Rogers was in the middle of one of the most dominant postseason pitching performances in tourney history, but head coach Tim Walton went to his second-string arm to start the potential clinching game of the WCWS championship series.
Delanie Gourley (15-1) started the game and was credited with the win and Rogers earned the save, her second of the year.
Rogers entered the game in the fifth inning allowing a run on two hits, but she snagged a grounder to her right and threw to first base for the final out that started the celebratory dogpile on the infield dirt.
Florida hit Alabama starter Jaclyn Traina hard early, scoring one in the first inning, then three in the second, with a three-run homer by Kirsti Merritt capping the inning. Stephanie Tofft added a home run in the sixth.
Traina, the MOP of the 2012 WCWS when she threw every pitch of Alabama’s title run, allowed five runs on six hits in 11/3 innngs. This year the WCWS went to the Gators Rodgers for her outstanding pitching efforts.
