Gators Receivers Coach Joker Phillips Resigns
Former Gators standout quarterback Chris Leak who returned to the Florida football program in May 2013 as an offensive graduate assistant will take over Phillips’ position immediately in preparation for the upcoming season. Leak was the captain of the University of Florida’s 2006 National Championship team and ended his collegiate career as the school’s all time leader in passing yards with 11,213, as well as 895 completions and 1,458 attemps.
“I appreciate the opportunity that Coach Muschamp has given me and my family,” said Leak. “It’s an honor to be coaching at my alma mater where I have so many fond memories both on and off the field. We have a tremendous coaching staff, a great group of players and a support system in place and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
Muschamp praised Phillips for his efforts and thanked him for his time spent with the Gator staff.
“I appreciate Joker’s contributions to our program and wish him and his wife, Leslie, nothing but the best in the future,” Muschamp said.
Phillips’ departure just three months before the regular season begins comes as a surprise to many as Phillips sent a tweet with the hashtag #ComePlayWRForTheJoker just a few days ago and was working Florida’s high school camp as recently as Monday.
