Gators Look Toward Next Year

Posted By Taylor Gaines On October 30, 2013 @ 1:50 PM In Florida News,Insider - Gators,NCAA | No Comments

When Will Muschamp announced that Kelvin Taylor would, in fact, start at running back on Saturday against Georgia,  I begin to think about how quickly this Gators season turned on its head.

Does inserting Kelvin Taylor into the lineup mean the Gators are looking toward next season, or does he give them the best chance to win?

Taylor was a guy who was nearly red-shirted before the season, and now he’s starting in the eighth game of the year. Nobody planned for it to go this way. But I believe now, with Taylor the starter, the Gators have truly begun to look toward next season.

Sure, he’s earned it, with 172 yards on 28 carries this season, a 6.1 yards-per-carry average. The true freshman has been one of the few bright spots to a dark, injury-riddled season.

But inserting Taylor in the starting lineup represents a shift toward developing future prospects for Florida.

It will be fun to watch the young guys feel their way into the game as the season winds down, but I wouldn’t expect too much success.

Quick Notes:

  • Sophomore left tackle D.J. Humphries, who was fighting to keep his starting job, sprained his MCL in practice this week and will miss the next 2-4 weeks, according to Muschamp.

  • Redshirt sophomore Tyler Moore, who was struggled on the right side, will take Humphries’ place, with junior transfer Trenton Brown taking over right tackle for now.

  • Expect redshirt junior left guard Max Garcia to see time at left tackle as well against Georgia.

  • Redshirt junior linebacker Ronald Powell (ankle) and senior defensive tackle Damien Jacobs (head) are likely to suit up on Saturday. Redshirt junior quarterback Tyler Murphy (shoulder) is also in good shape to take the field again.

  • Redshirt junior linebacker Darrin Kitchens (shoulder) practiced Tuesday, but his status is uncertain still.

What does everybody else think?
