FSU to Host FGCU in NIT Tournament
Florida State will play host to Florida Gulf Coast in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday, March 18, at 7:00 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The Seminoles are one of four No. 1 seeds in the 32-team tournament and will face one of the four No. 8 seeds in the Eagles. The Eagles won the regular season championship of the Atlantic Sun Conference before losing in the finals of their conference tournament to Mercer.
The winner of Tuesdays game between Florida State and High Point will meet the winner of the Georgetown vs. West Virginia game on date and time to be determined.
This is a great opportunity for our team to continue playing and to gain experience in a postseason tournament, said Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton. The NIT field includes many outstanding teams that have enjoyed outstanding seasons. We are excited to continue playing and we are excited to face Florida Gulf Coast. The field in the NIT continues to improve each season and this is quite possible the best NIT field I can remember. We really want our fans to continue to be behind our team as they have been all season long; we need the support of our fans against Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday night.
Florida State enters the NIT with a 19-13 record and finished in a tie for seventh place in the ACC with a 9-9 record. The Seminoles were 1-1 in the ACC Tournament with a victory over Maryland. Florida State is the third winningest program in the ACC since the start of the 2005-06 season and is looking to win 20 games under Hamilton for the eighth time.
The Seminoles have won four of their last six games including a victory over NCAA Tournament participant Pitt (Feb. 23, 71-66). The Seminoles played 12 games against teams that were selected to play in the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
Florida Gulf Coast enters the NIT with a 22-12 overall record and a 14-4 record in Atlantic Sun play.
The Seminoles selection to the NIT marks the school-record ninth consecutive postseason appearance for the Seminoles all under 12th year Head Coach Leonard Hamilton. The Seminoles have appeared in the NIT in six seasons under Hamilton (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2013 and 2014) and made a school record four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2009-1012. .
