FSU rallies past FGCU

Tallahassee, Fla.- The No. 1 Florida State Seminoles (23-5) were forced to rely on late game heroics as they defeated Florida Gulf Coast (18-11) 8-3 Tuesday night. The shorthanded Seminoles trailed 3-2 entering the eighth inning, but they scored 6 runs in the inning to take the lead and the game.

Josh Delph started the rally as he singled to lead off the eighth for the Seminoles. The next batter, John Sansone, was hit by a pitch, and Jose Brizuela reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs in the inning. The Seminoles tied the game 3-3 when first baseman John Nogowski drew a base loaded walk. FSU took the lead for good when Casey Smit ripped an RBI single to left scoring Sansone and Brizuela.  The Seminoles added three more insurance runs in the inning on RBI’s by Ladson Montgomery, Jameis Winston, and Danny De La Calle.

Starting pitcher Peter Miller lasted only an inning and third for FSU giving up 3 runs on 2 hits as he walked 2 and struck out 2. Strong outings form relievers Dylan Silva, Gage Smith (W 4-0), and Jameis Winston kept the Seminoles in the game and gave them the opportunity to win it in the eighth. The three relievers combined to allow only 3 hits, walk 1 and strike out 7 in seven and two-thirds innings.

Florida State was once again without two of their starting outfielders in the win. Left-fielder D.J. Stewart missed the game as he served the last game of his four game suspension and center fielder Ben DeLuzio missed his seventh straight game since running into a wall against Clemson. Stewart and the Seminoles return to the field Friday for the first game of their weekend series against Notre Dame.
