Florida State Director of Athletics Stan Wilcox announced Tuesday the hiring of Karl Hicks, ACC Senior Associate Commissioner/Men’s Basketball Operations, to the newly-created position of Deputy Director of Athletics for External Operations at FSU. Hicks will oversee all external operations for athletics including tickets, sports information, marketing and promotions, communications, website and risk management and will serve as the staff liaison with Seminole Productions as well as oversight of the men’s basketball program.
“We are thrilled to have Karl join the Athletics Department Executive Staff,” said Wilcox. “Karl is a former student-athlete, coach and seasoned veteran administrator with more than 20 years of experience in collegiate and professional athletics. His wealth of knowledge, experiences and national connections both in the collegiate and professional worlds will help build upon an already highly experienced and seasoned staff. We look forward to working with Karl.”
Hicks’ duties with the ACC included oversight of all men’s basketball operations for the conference since 2007; oversight and management of the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament during that time as well as oversight of two NCAA 2nd and 3rd round tournament sites hosted by the ACC.
“Karl has done an excellent job for the ACC and I greatly appreciate his many contributions,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “He is an outstanding administrator and person, and I am pleased for him and for Florida State that he will be in a prominent role in Tallahassee and remaining a part of the ACC. He will be an outstanding addition to Stan’s executive staff.”
Prior to his role with the ACC, Hicks served as the Assistant General Manager and Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations for the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats from 2003-2007 where he managed a $48 million dollar operating budget as well as the team’s NBA salary cap. Hicks was hired by the NBA in 2000 as Executive Director of the National Basketball Developmental League where he spent three years managing the league’s basketball operations. He served as the Assistant Commissioner for Institutional and Student Services at the Southeastern Conference from 1998-00 and prior to that was an NCAA enforcement representative from 1994-98.
Hicks, 54, captained the University of New Hampshire’s basketball team his senior season in 1983 and graduated with a degree in communications. He served as an assistant basketball coach at his alma mater and then American University from 1985-90. He earned an MBA with a concentration in finance from the University of Maryland in 1992.
Hicks will begin his duties at Florida State following the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
