Miami and Florida State are both ranked in the top 10, but according to Las Vegas, the gulf between the teams is much larger.
CBSSports.com’s Bruce Feldman pointed out on Twitter that the game opened with Florida State as a 22-point favorite, which is the largest point spread in history in a game featuring two top ten teams this late into the season.
So why is Miami such a big underdog? Well, it’s important to remember that while a point spread is somewhat indicative of the two teams playing, mostly they’re just a representation of what Vegas thinks the spread would have to be to ensure equal betting on both sides of the line.
