Former Rays closer Rodney now on O’s radar
Since the future of the two year $15 million dollar deal with free agent closer Grant Balfour may be off the table. The man who for the last three years has been serving in the closer’s role for the Oakland A’s failed a team physical and that puts everything concerning Balfour on hold.
His right shoulder is a concern and the 36 year old pitchers future in Baltimore might be done before it ever gets started. With that in mind both the Baltimore Sun and MASN are reporting that team have started talks with former Rays closer Fernando Rodney.
While Balfour might have been a better fit for Baltimore with him possibly off the table that makes Rodney the most attractive option for the Orioles. The team’s star third baseman Manny Machado agent Dan Lozano of MVP Sports Group, also represents Rodney so there is a very important comfort level between the team and the players management.
But there might be a wrinkle here as according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com Rodney is looking to make at least $10 million dollars a year and the Mariners are in on him. The ironic thing in this case of course is that Baltimore traded an All Star closer in Jim Johnson to Oakland because he was likely to make about — you guessed it — $10 million dollars a year and the O’s wanted a closer with a more friendly price tag.
MLB trade Rumors Steve Adams projected that it would take a two year $18 million dollar deal to land Rodney.
