Former Knicks Coach Jeff Van Gundy Backs Woodson Up

Jeff Van Gundy isn't sure why his name has emerged publicly as a potential replacement for Mike Woodson, but the former Knicks coach is certain of one thing in his view of the job Woodson is doing despite the team's 3-13 start this season.
"The last problem the Knicks have, the very last problem, is a coaching issue," Van Gundy said Wednesday on the Mike Lupica Show on ESPN radio. "Mike Woodson is an outstanding basketball coach who's done an outstanding job. So how can a guy who went from brilliant be on the quote-proverbial hot seat 16 games into the next season? ... I understand just how difficult it is and I feel badly for Mike."
Woodson and the Knicks (3-13), who have been without All-Star center Tyson Chandler for the past month, are languishing with a nine-game losing streak entering Thursday's game against the Nets. Yet, they somehow are just three games out of first place in the downtrodden Atlantic Division.
