The Bears have been without a backup quarterback since Josh McCown joined Lovie Smith down in Tampa. Now a former Bucs quarterback may take McCown’s old role in Chicago.
Josh Freeman worked out for the Chicago Bears Monday, auditioning for a possible role backing up Jay Cutler.
It was Freeman’s first workout in what’s been a quiet offseason for the 26-year-old once anointed the Bucs’ “franchise quarterback” by then-GM Mark Dominik.
The 17th overall pick in the 2009 draft, Freeman led the Bucs to a 10-6 record in 2010. By 2012, he’d shattered multiple franchise records, including single season passing yards (4,065) and touchdowns (27).
Things unraveled quickly in 2013, however, and he was benched in favor of rookie Mike Glennon after starting the season 0-3.
A highly-publicized feud with Greg Schiano, including allegations of rigging the captain’s vote and leaking confidential information about Freeman’s status in the league’s substance abuse program, led to his release on October 3.
Three days later, he signed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings and started one game — Week 7 against the New York Giants. He completed 20 of 53 passes in that game, throwing for 190 yards and an interception.
