Eagles WR Arrelious Benn Tears ACL
As if Arrelious Benn hasn’t dealt with enough injury adversity, news out of Eagles camp is that the former Bucs wide receiver suffered a torn ACL today in practice.
The injury came when Benn was serving as a blocker during a kickoff drill. It is the same knee — his left — that has been problematic throughout his short NFL career and sidelined him in training camp already.
On July 27, during the Eagles’ first practice, Benn hyperextended the knee and was forced to miss several days of camp. He’d just returned to action Sunday.
A second-round pick by the Bucs in 2010, Benn’s season last year was cut short due to both a shoulder injury and a knee injury that slowed him in training camp. Benn’s rookie season was also cut short due to a torn ACL in his left knee.
Benn was hoping to get a fresh start in Philadelphia and move beyond his injury-plagued start in the league. Over the course of three seasons in Tampa, the former Illini caught just 59 passes for 862 receiving yards.
He was traded to the Eagles this offseason along with a seventh-round pick in exchange for a a sixth-rounder and a conditional draft choice. The Eagles then signed him to a one-year contract extension through 2014.
With Jeremy Maclin out for the year and Benn possibly headed to IR, the Eagles have an even more dire situation at wide receiver, which could force them to rely on troubled wide receiver Riley Cooper, who returned to team facilities today after a four-day absence.Eagles WR Arrelious Benn Tears ACL by Jenna Laine
