Florida State Travels to Face Wake Forest

Florida State plays its first of six consecutive new ACC opponents for the season as the Seminoles travel to play Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. on February 15, 2014 at 8:00 p.m.
The Seminoles’ game against the Deacons marks their first of six ACC opponents the Seminoles have yet to play this year to close out the regular season – Wake Forest, UNC, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Boston College and Syracuse. The Seminoles have already finished their regular season games against nine of the 15 ACC teams including two-game series against Clemson, Maryland and Miami.
Florida State’s game against the Deacons marks its third trip to the state of North Carolina this season and its fourth game against a team from the Tar Heel state. Following their game against Wake Forest, the Seminoles will play host to North Carolina on Monday, February 17 at 7:00 p.m. in their second consecutive appearance on ESPN’s Big Monday telecast.
All-ACC candidate Aaron Thomas is shooting .542 (13 of 24) from the 3-point line in the last five games. He made his career-best six 3-point field goals in Florida State’s 70-50 win over Virginia Tech on February 5.
Florida State is ranked 11th nationally in field goal percentage defense (.386) and 21st in the nation in blocked shots (5.8 bpg). The Seminoles are one of only nine teams ranked in the nation’s top 25 in both the field goal percentage defense and blocked shots categories. Florida State led the nation in field goal percentage defense in both the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton, who led the Seminoles to the 2012 ACC Championship, is ranked 11th in league history in overall wins in the ACC. He is one of three current coaches (also Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina’s Roy Williams) to be ranked in the top 11 for all-time wins as ACC coaches.

…Defeat Wake Forest and win its six game in the last seven outings against the Deacons. The Seminoles defeated the Deacons in their final, regular season game in 2010, swept the two-game regular season series in 2011, won the only meeting between the two teams in 2012 and split the regular season series in 2013;
…Defeat Wake Forest and win for the third time in the last five seasons at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Seminoles won in Winston-Salem in 2011 and 2012.
In the last six seasons (through February 12, 2014), Florida State is 57-38 (.600 winning percentage) and has finished in third place in the league standings three times in regular season ACC play. The Seminoles average 10.4 ACC regular season wins per season and have finished in the top four of the ACC standings four times in the last five seasons. Florida State is third in the ACC in conference wins with 57, third in winning percentage at .600 and tied for second (with North Carolina) with four top-four league standing finishes in the last five seasons.
Florida State, which has shot 50 percent or better from the field in 11 of 24 games this season, shot 50 percent from the field in its last game against Miami and has shot 50 percent or better in three of their last seven games. The Seminoles enter Saturday’s game against Wake Forest ranked third in the ACC with a .467 field goal shooting percentage for the season. Florida State ranked sixth in the ACC last season with a .444 field goal shooting percentage. The Seminoles’ current .467 field goal shooting mark is their highest since the 2006-07 season when they shot .481 from the field in finishing with a 22-13 record.
After making an ACC record 16 3-point shots in its 85-61 victory over Maryland on January 12, the Seminoles have developed into one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the ACC.
Florida State ranked seventh in the ACC with a .348 3-point field goal shooting mark last season. The Seminoles’ current .373 shooting mark from the bonusphere is their highest since the 2006-07 season when they shot .380 from the 3-point line in finishing with a 22-13 record.
All-American Al Thornton, who will serve as the Seminoles’ Legend at the 2014 ACC Tournament, led the Seminoles with a .530 shooting mark from the field and led the team with a .444 mark from the 3-point line during his senior season of 2006-07. Thornton was the ACC Player of the Year runner-up, earned All-ACC First Team honors and All-America Third Team honors as he closed out a glorious career as a Florida State star.
