Florida State Baseball Opens 2014 NCAA Tournament
Florida State?baseball (43-15) opens the 2014 NCAA Tallahassee Regional Friday, May 30 at 6:00 p.m. against Georgia Southern (39-21). The Seminoles received an at-large bid into the tournament out of the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Eagles secured the Southern Conference Championship this past weekend.
Florida State and Georgia Southern met annually from 1960-1985, with the lone exception in 1980, but have not met since the two schools faced off in Statesboro, Ga., on April 17, 1985. FSU holds a 76-29 all-time record against GSU, while the two schools have never met in the postseason. The Seminoles have won the last four meetings and 19 of the last 20 games in the series.
This year marks the 37th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament for the Seminoles and the 52nd appearance overall - both stand as the second most all-time. Head coach Mike Martin has led his team to the NCAA?s in each of his 35 years on the bench at Florida State. He has also led FSU to 15 College World Series appearances including three trips in the last six years (2008, 2010 and 2012).
The Seminoles have posted a record of 99-37 (.728) while playing at home during NCAA Regional and Super Regional action including a mark of 47-19 in the 21st century.
Florida State has won 19 straight regional games since falling to Bucknell in the opening game of the 2008 Tallahassee Regional. During the current win streak, the Seminoles have outscored the competition 230-76 reaching double-digit runs 11 times. FSU has won by nine or more runs eight times, while holding the opposition under six runs over the last 12 games.
Florida State?s back-to-back shutouts against Savannah State and Troy in last year?s regional marked the first time the Seminoles had blanked opponents in consecutive games since shutting out Arizona (4-0) and Dartmouth (6-0) in the first two games of the 1970 College World Series. FSU has registered 15 all-time shutouts in the NCAA Tournament including 11 in regional play and four in the CWS.
Georgia Southern enters the regional fourth in the country in home runs and eighth in runs scored. Eagle reliever Jason Richman is first in the country with 45 appearances and second with a 1.06 ERA. Teammate Matt McCall is tied with FSU?s Gage Smith for second in the country with 38 appearances.
The Seminoles own an all-time record of 142-33 against SoCon schools and 7-1 in the NCAA Tourney. Samford was the last school that currently belongs to the Southern Conference that FSU faced in the postseason as the Seminoles defeated the Bulldogs twice in the 2012 Tallahassee Regional.
RHP Mike Compton (7-2, 3.06 ERA) will get the start for the Seminoles on Friday, while Georgia Southern will send out LHP Sam Howard (6-6, 2.60 ERA).
Florida State is 40-11 all-time in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Seminoles have won five straight regional openers with their last loss coming to Bucknell in 2008. Under head coach Mike Martin, FSU is 30-4 in the opening game of regional play. Prior to Martin?s arrival, the Seminoles were 10-7.
Alabama (34-22) and Kennesaw State (37-21) will open the 2014 Tallahassee Regional with game one slated for 12:00 p.m. on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. Both games on Friday will air on ESPN3.
