Florida was picked to finish behind Georgia and South Carolina in the media’s preseason poll at the Southeastern Conference’s Media Days on Thursday.
Alabama was projected to win the conference with 182 first-place votes, while Georgia (38), South Carolina (18), Texas A&M (4) and LSU (1) also received votes. Florida got zero first-place nominations.
The predicted finish in the East was as follows: Georgia (149 first-place votes), South Carolina (75), Florida (19), Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Missouri and Kentucky.
In the West, Alabama (225) is followed by Texas A&M (11), LSU (7), Ole Miss, Auburn, Mississippi State and Arkansas.
If the media is correct, we would have a rematch of the 2012 SEC Championship game, with Alabama and Georgia meeting in the final.
It is worth noting, however, that the media has incorrectly predicted the SEC champion in 17 of the last 21 years. Last season, LSU was predicted to beat the Crimson Tide in Atlanta.
Nonetheless, it’s exciting to see predictions begin to roll in because it can only mean one thing: College football season is right around the corner.
Florida opens its 2013 campaign on Saturday, August 31, against Toledo. Coverage starts on the SEC Network at 12:21 p.m. ET.
