Florida Gators Spring Game: What You Need to Know

Jeff Driskel makes his return on Saturday in the Gators’ spring game. Unlike last year, the Gators will actually have a scrimmage instead of just open practice.

The Matchup: Team Orange vs. Team Blue

Game Time: Saturday, April 12, 1:30 p.m. ET

Where to Watch: Live on Gator Vision (with a premium subscription), Tape-delayed on Sun Sports (5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday)

Injury Report: OUT – RB Matt Jones (meniscus), DT Leon Orr (foot), LB Alex Anzalone  (shoulder), LB Matt Rolin (ACL), LB Jeremi Powell (ACL); NO CONTACT — WR Andre Debose (knee)

Position Battles: Wide Receiver — As usual, the Gators come into the spring with a group of unproven wide receivers. Of the returners, Quinton Dunbar led the team last season with 548 yards on 40 catches. Demarcus Robinson enters his sophomore season looking to bounce back after only 5 catches his freshman season. He is arguably the Gators most talented receiver, making this an important year for him. Ahmad Fulwood, Chris Thompson, Alvin Bailey and Latroy Pittman will battle it out to find playing time come the fall.

Cornerback — Vernon Hargreaves III is pretty much set in stone as one of the starters for the Gators. On the other side, however, two true freshman will be battling it out for the starting spot: Jalen Tabor and Duke Dawson. Tabor is apparently the more polished prospect, and Will Muschamp has mentioned that jamming receivers off the line is one of his strengths. Tabor is about three inches shorter but plays the ball well and has apparently gained everyone’s favorite label: “scrappy.”

Storylines: Driskel’s Return – After a broken leg knocked QB Jeff Driskel out for the 2013 season, he makes his return to the field Saturday. It will be interesting to see how he performs now that prized prospect Will Grier is nipping at his heels.

Up-Tempo Offense — Former Duke offensive coordinator Kurt Roper has talked extensively about picking up the pace of the Gators’ offense and decreasing their time in between plays. Look out to see if there is a noticeable difference in the speed of the Gators’ offense on Saturday.

Orange vs. Blue — Former Gators Josh Evans and Shane Matthews captained Team Orange while Chris Doering and Jelani Jenkins captained Team Blue, drafting their teams on Thursday. Evans and Matthews geared their squad toward the defensive side of the ball, led by Hargreaves and DL Jonathan Bullard. Doering and Jenkins picked up offensive leaders Driskel and RB Kelvin Taylor for Team Blue.
