Florida completes the sweep over Florida State with 8-0 victory
Tallahassee, Fla.- The Florida Gators (21-12) completed their season sweep of the Florida State Seminoles (26-7) Tuesday night with a 8-0 victory in front of 6,514 fans at Dick Howser Stadium.
Billy Strode made his first start of the season for the Seminoles and managed to hold the Florida batters in check for the first 4 inning. He allowed 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 4 and walking 3. Strode was replaced by Gage Smith in the 5th inning after giving up a lead-off single and walking a batter. The Gators took advantage of the pitching change, scoring 4 runs in the inning to take a commanding lead they wouldnt relinquish,
Floridas John Sternagel drove in the first run of the game when he hit a 3-2 pitch from Smith to left field that drove in Peter Alonso. The outburst continued when the very next batter, Casey Turgeon, hit a three-run homerun over the wall in right.
The Seminoles series lone offensive woes continued Tuesday night as they managed only 4 hits in the loss. The only sign of life for the Seminoles on the offensive side came in the 7th inning when they briefly threatened to close the gap. FSU loaded the bases in the innings as Jameis Winston reached on an error and Casey Smit and Justin Gonzolez walked. The rally attempt came to an abrupt end when pinch hitter Josh Delph grounded out to 2nd base on a 3-2 pitch.
The Seminoles were outscored 13-2 in the three game series with both runs coming on solo homeruns by Jose Brizuela. Tuesdays series finally marked the first time the Florida State has been shut out by Florida since 1994.
