Fantasy Basketball: Shawn Marion Keeps You At The Top
by Royce King
THREE TO SET FREE
Here are three players you can drop in leagues without an injured reserved (IR) slot.
Andrei Kirilenko, F, Brooklyn: Kirilenko is a name you know without a game you can trust. He is a 12-year veteran with only one season of 82 games to his credit. Currently playing for the Nets, Kirilenko receives an average of 13.3 minutes per game (mpg) with a yield of six points and three rebounds. Clearly, this does nothing to move the arrow of value in an upward direction. You can win without him. So, keep it moving, nothing to see here.
Steve Nash, G, Lakers: Nash was an elite Fantasy point guard for at least a decade. However, that time has come and gone. In my opinion, Nash should have retired after the 2011-12 season as a Phoenix Suns legend. Nash, now has 18 years in the league and will soon be age 40 on February 7, 2014. Can you see where this is going? The fat lady is singing… seven points and five assists, while shooting 26 percent from the field in 23 minutes… means you should retire Steve Nash in Fantasy basketball, even if the NBA won’t.
JaVale McGee, C, Denver: McGee is a six-year pro at age 25, whose raw talent and athleticism keep hope alive for owners wanting rebounds and blocks. Unfortunately, McGee has a stress fracture in his left tibia and will be out indefinitely, pending further evaluation. Can you say, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick.” He wasn’t exactly fulfilling any expectations playing 16 minutes per game prior to injury. The final say on this matter is easy. Get well soon, but on the waiver wire. See ya!
THESE FIVE ARE ON THE RISE
Steve Blake, G, Lakers: Blake leads the Lakers in assists per game (apg), 3-pointers made per game (3pm), and minutes per game (mpg). With Steve Nash out, adding a savvy Blake will provide a nice boost in points, assists, and threes.
Kyle Korver, G, Atlanta: Korver is shooting almost 60 percent from the field while contributing statistically across the board in Fantasy. He is showing no signs of slowing and at this pace a career year is probable.
Shawn Marion, F, Dallas: Marion was once a Top 3 Fantasy player on a yearly basis. While those days have surely passed, Marion is a silent assassin who does enough to take out an opponent. His graceful aging and consistent production keep veteran Fantasy owners at the top of multiple leagues.
Markieff Morris, F, Phoenix: Morris may be your only chance at obtaining a 20 points per game scorer off of waivers. Absolutely on fire and burning up the charts, it would be a mistake to disregard him due to the Suns two game schedule this week.
Miles Plumlee, C, Phoenix: Plumlee is priority number one if you are in need of blocks. His 2.3 blocks per game rank among the top five in the NBA. Add 50 percent shooting, a double-double season average of points and rebounds along with 31 minutes per game and you have a “winning” waiver wire addition.
