It was another terrible day in the sunshine state Saturday. Florida State, the only ranked team in the state last week, missed a last second field goal and lost to Virginia 14-13, dropping them to 7-4. Miami improved to 6-5 while dropping South Florida to 5-5 with a thrilling* 6-3 win over the Bulls. Florida had to rally to beat an FCS school in Furman and UCF threw a last second interception, losing to East Carolina 38-31 and dropping them to 4-7.
LSU remained alone at the top spot after thrashing Ole Miss. Alabama was surprisingly not a unanimous #2 after losses by Oklahoma State, Oregon and Oklahoma. Oklahoma State, despite their overtime loss at Iowa State, still received a second place vote. Should Iowa State pull another upset and defeat the Sooners in Norman this weekend, Oklahoma State would clinch the Big 12 championship.
Houston rose to #8, ranking as high as four in one poll. The winner of Friday?s Houston-Tulsa game will meet Southern Miss in the Conference-USA championship game.
TCU has clinched the Mountain West title.
The Big East is a mess ? nearly every team can win it. Rutgers and Louisville can clinch at least a share of the league title with wins this weekend.
Clemson took a big tumble all the way down to 17 after being blown out by North Carolina State. It was a little surprising Michigan didn?t climb higher in the polls after defeating Nebraska 45-17 Saturday. Two Big-10 teams, Wisconsin, ranked 16 and Penn State, ranked 19, will play for the right to meet Michigan State in the Big-10 Championship. Virginia (24) will host Virginia Tech (5) in a de facto ACC Coastal division championship game. The winner will meet Clemson.
Georgia clinched the SEC East with a win over Kentucky Saturday. If LSU defeats Arkansas, the Dawgs and Tigers will battle in Atlanta. If Auburn defeats Alabama and Arkansas beats LSU, Arkansas would win the west. If both Arkansas and Alabama win, the teams would finish in a three-way tie that would be decided by a combination of the BCS and their head-to-head match-ups.
Oregon will clinch the Pac-10 North with a win over rival Oregon State. Southern Cal, who remained a spot behind Oregon, despite beating them, should wrap up the Pac-10 South with a win over UCLA this weekend, but of course, the Trojans can?t play in the title game. UCLA gets into the title game with a win or losses by Arizona State and Utah. Arizona State gets in with a win over Cal, a UCLA loss and a Utah win over Colorado. Utah needs to beat Colorado and hope both UCLA and Arizona State lose. Stanford wins the North if Oregon State can defeat Oregon.
